One year after his passing, La Bâtie pays tribute to the artist who, in the words of Louis Aragon, “revolutionised the way we see”.
Born in Waco, Texas, Robert Wilson was one of the most influential figures in theatre and visual art. His stage work brought together an extraordinary range of disciplines (dance, movement, light, sculpture, music and text) into striking visual worlds charged with emotion. His productions earned international acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Among his first major personal works were Deafman Glance (1970) and A Letter for Queen Victoria (1974–75). Together with Philip Glass, he created the landmark opera Einstein on the Beach (1976). Over the course of his career, Robert Wilson collaborated with artists including Heiner Müller, Tom Waits, Susan Sontag, Laurie Anderson, William S. Burroughs, Lou Reed, Jessye Norman and Anna Calvi. He also left an indelible mark on masterpieces such as Krapp’s Last Tape by Samuel Beckett, The Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht, Pelléas et Mélisande by Claude Debussy, Faust by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and The Fables of Jean de La Fontaine.
Wilson’s drawings and paintings have been exhibited in hundreds of solo and group exhibitions worldwide and are held in both public and private collections. He was also the founder of the Watermill Center, an interdisciplinary laboratory for the arts located in Water Mill, New York.
Robert Wilson passed away on 31 July 2025 at the age of 83.
