Loosely inspired by Story of the Eye by Georges Bataille, Brazilian director Janaina Leite, one of the leading voices on today’s Brazilian scene, explores the relationship between theatre and pornography. The piece follows a group of characters who become readers of Bataille’s work, unpacking passages on the discovery of sexuality and connecting them to their own personal histories. This portrayal of a form of eroticism rooted in excess and transgression brings together fifteen performers, both professional and amateur, including sex workers. Audiences are invited into a radical experience where theatrical fiction, live music and explicit pornographic scenes intertwine.
História do Olho confronts, head-on, our relationship with shame and desire, taboos and impulses. Yet its performative transgression never slips into mere provocation; the work remains deeply attentive to understanding and consent. This dark and subversive fairy tale becomes a disturbing theatrical journey, pulling together opposing forces: the vulgar and the sublime, the ordinary and the cosmic, the everyday and the abyss.
