Come closer, follow Diederik Peeters, and step through the looking glass. A magician of theatre, the Flemish artist invites doubt to creep in: what if nothing truly separates reality from illusion? In a shifting, disorientating visual world, Confabulations unfolds along a fragile edge where perceptions, memories and certainties begin to waver. In psychiatry, “confabulation” refers to the involuntary creation of false memories to fill the gaps left by memory loss. Peeters takes hold of this phenomenon, adopting the role of a psychiatrist and slowly drawing the audience into an elusive feeling of visual vertigo.
The second chapter in a trilogy on illusion following Apparitions (2018), the piece confronts the histories of psychiatry and neurology with the lived realities of neurodivergent people. Drawing from medical archives and historical and personal accounts, Confabulations features a fascinating exposé that blends science with fiction and hallucinations.
