Repertório N.1
Dance
Turning dance into an act of self-defence: this is the radical principle running through the Repertório trilogy, presented here in its entirety for the very first time. Inspired by voguing, ballroom culture, capoeira and queer community codes, Brazilian artists Davi Pontes and Wallace Ferreira transform the body into a tool for resistance. In the face of structural violence, their movements become strategies for survival, escape and confrontation.
Created amid the tensions following the election of Jair Bolsonaro in 2018, Repertório N.1 is the trilogy’s most direct and confrontational chapter. By reclaiming the gesture of the gun, a symbol widely associated with supporters of the far-right president, the performers appropriate and redirect it against the power it represents. Here, there is no music: only breath, footsteps striking the floor, and the scrape of trainers against the ground. Between stillness and explosion, vogue poses and frantic accelerations, the bodies become impossible to pin down. They challenge the audience’s gaze even as they catch it.
For Pontes and Ferreira, self-defence does not rely on weapons, but on presence, sensuality, vulnerability and solidarity. A tense, mesmerising dance that transforms uncertainty into strength.
