Marlene Monteiro Freitas opened the Festival d’Avignon with nights full of promise. Inspired by One Thousand and One Nights, NÔT – “night” in Creole – plunges us into a cascade of tales: of love and war, journeys and beasts. Each story ensures the survival of its narrator, in a high-stakes game between life and death, imprisonment and freedom, vice and virtue. Layer by layer, cloaked in invisible scents and splashes, the exuberant Cape Verdean choreographer constructs a Goya-like architecture of human nature. On stage, desires and realities collide in a dance of rebellion and conformity.
