Último helecho
Dance / music
In their acclaimed Romances inciertos, François Chaignaud and Nina Laisné explored androgynous figures drawn from Spanish baroque folklore. The pair now returns with Ultimo Helecho (The Last Fern), adding to their choreographic and musical cosmogony with this work – an ode to Argentina’s folk traditions.
Argentina’s folklore is packed with stories from Indigenous communities, alongside fragments of European culture and neighbouring civilisations. Together with singer and composer Nadia Larcher, Chaignaud dances through the infinite variations of partnered dances – from love-drenched chamamé duets to the fiery contests of malambo – inspiring vocal arrangements where fluidly androgynous voices entwine and collide. Joined by eight versatile, folk and baroque musicians, this is an underground celebration that weaves between South American and baroque traditions, where the earthly and the heavenly come together.
