Dance

The street vibrates and comes alive with pantsula steps. This dance, characterized by extremely lively, rhythmic foot-tapping and leg movements, originated in the townships of Johannesburg in the 1950s and 60s. Emblematic of the anti-apartheid struggle, it is performed in different communities, embodying the audacity of youth everywhere. An international group has formed under the name Impilo Mapantsula, bringing together dancers who guarantee the originality of her choreography. And when Basel choreographer Jérémy Nedd calls, they set the city ablaze with a breath of freedom. Devilishly virtuoso.

Impilo Mapantsula

The street comes alive with pantsula. The dance, characterised by darting steps and extremely fast shuffling and jumping movements originated in the townships of Johannesburg in the 1950s and 60s. An emblem of the anti-apartheid struggle, it has developed within different communities, embodying the boldness of youth. An international group has been formed under the name Impilo Mapantsula, bringing together dancers who guarantee the originality of the dance’s unique moves. When Basel-based choreographer Jérémy Nedd called, they set the city ablaze with a burning spirit of freedom. Fiendishly good.
